Fiberglass bathtubs can crack if they are installed incorrectly or without additional support. Over time, weight pressure can cause cracks to form. If left unrepaired, cracks can spread throughout the tub, allowing water to seep through and damage the underlying materials, including your home's structure.
Here are some steps you can take to repair a cracked fiberglass bathtub:
Clean the surface
Thoroughly clean the bathtub's surface with a sponge, household cleaning sprays, and rubbing alcohol wipes.
Apply a finishing coat or sealer
Use a kit that carries tape or polymer paint for surface repair. For deeper cracks, use a kit that contains glue or pastes that seal the cracks.
Sand the dried filler
Allow the mixture to set for two to three hours. Once it's set, use fine grit sandpaper to eliminate unevenness on the surface and create a smooth finish.
The size of the crack will determine the repair method:
Minor cracks and spider cracking: Can be repaired with a fiberglass bathtub repair kit
Larger cracks up to 16 inches: Can be repaired with a bathtub inlay kit
